Overview
Machu Picchu & Salkantay Trek – Mountain Medicine CME
September 17 – September 25, 2027
Trek deep into the heart of the Peruvian Andes on an epic, high-altitude expedition that blends world-class mountain medicine education, immersive Andean culture, and one of the most breathtaking trekking routes on Earth. This Mountain Medicine CME course takes you from the ancient streets of Cusco, across the dramatic Salkantay Pass, and onward to the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu.
After acclimatizing in Cusco with guided cultural excursions, participants set off on the Salkantay Trek, a less-crowded yet equally spectacular alternative to the Inca Trail. Along the way, you’ll hike through glacial valleys, cloud forests, and high alpine terrain while staying in upgraded Sky Domes and Jungle Domes, soaking in natural hot springs, and learning wilderness medicine where it truly applies — in the mountains, at altitude, and far from definitive care.
Education is woven seamlessly into the journey, with evening lectures, workshops, and hands-on learning delivered by the Wild Med Adventures faculty in real expedition environments. This is not a sightseeing tour — it’s a physically demanding, deeply rewarding adventure designed for those who want to learn, challenge themselves, and build lasting connections while earning CME in one of the most iconic landscapes on the planet.

Participants come from diverse medical and non-medical backgrounds, yet quickly form strong connections through teamwork, evening discussions, and the collective experience of trekking together in the mountains. If you value camaraderie, inclusivity, and learning alongside motivated, curious people, you’ll feel right at home on this journey.
The Experience
The Experience
This is not a sightseeing trek — it’s a full-spectrum Andean expedition.
Over nine days in Peru, you’ll move from the historic streets of Cusco into the high alpine passes, glaciers, cloud forests, and jungles of the Salkantay route, trekking day after day through dramatic terrain that demands focus, resilience, and teamwork. Evenings are spent in upgraded Sky Domes and Jungle Domes, soaking in hot springs, sharing meals, and connecting with a group that quickly begins to feel like family.
Luxury Lodging in the Middle of Nowhere
One of the most unexpected elements of this expedition is the level of comfort woven into an otherwise rugged journey. Along the Salkantay Trek, you’ll stay in glass-topped Sky Domes and Jungle Domes, falling asleep beneath the stars after long days on the trail. These carefully selected camps allow for deep rest, meaningful conversation, and immersive learning — without disconnecting from the raw beauty of the Andes.
Learn Where It Counts
Mountain medicine comes alive when it’s taught at altitude, in remote terrain, and under real environmental stressors. Education is delivered through evening lectures, workshops, and hands-on discussions in camps and lodges along the route, allowing participants to immediately contextualize patient assessment, decision-making, and evacuation challenges in true wilderness settings.
The Flow of Each Day
Morning departures into high-altitude terrain, valleys, and mountain passes
Long, purposeful trekking days with time to move, acclimatize, and observe the landscape
Midday meals and rest surrounded by glaciers, rivers, and cloud forest
Evening education, reflection, and shared meals in camps and lodges
This rhythm balances physical challenge, recovery, and learning, creating an experience that is demanding yet sustainable across the full expedition.
What You’ll Take Home
Yes, you’ll earn 20 AMA PRA Category 1 CME™ credits — but you’ll also leave with:
Firsthand experience trekking one of the world’s most iconic mountain routes
Practical mountain medicine knowledge learned in real environments
A deeper understanding of high-altitude physiology and expedition decision-making
Meaningful friendships built through shared challenge
Most participants finish this journey amazed that something this immersive, challenging, and memorable could also count as CME — and already thinking about where the next adventure might take them.
