Overview

Ecuador Trek & Optional Cotopaxi Climb
October 17 – 27, 2026

Join Wild Med Adventures for an immersive Mountain Medicine CME expedition through the heart of Ecuador — a journey that blends high-altitude trekking, real-world wilderness medicine education, and deep cultural exploration in one of South America’s most dramatic landscapes.

This expedition begins in the historic city of Quito, where colonial streets and vibrant culture set the stage for an adventure that steadily ascends into the Andes. Over the course of the trip, participants will climb several non-technical peaks — including Ilaló, Pasochoa, and Rumiñahui — gaining progressive altitude exposure while applying wilderness medicine concepts exactly where they matter most.

For those seeking an added challenge, an optional technical expedition climb of Cotopaxi offers the opportunity to summit one of the world’s highest active volcanoes at 19,347 feet. Participants who choose not to climb will enjoy a well-earned rest day filled with exploration and recovery. The journey concludes with two nights in the Mindo Cloud Forest, providing space to reflect, recover, and reconnect before returning home.

This is not a packaged holiday.

It is a physically demanding, educationally rich, and deeply rewarding expedition designed for those who want to grow as clinicians, teammates, and adventurers — while forming friendships that last long after the mountains fade from view.

Who It's For

Who It's For:

This expedition is designed for individuals who want to combine high-altitude trekking, real-world wilderness medicine education, and cultural immersion, while learning and practicing skills in challenging, remote mountain environments.

This trip is ideal for

  • Physically fit hikers comfortable at altitude
You should enjoy long days of hiking on steep, uneven terrain and be prepared for sustained exertion at high elevation.

  • Medical professionals seeking immersive CME
Including physicians, PAs, NPs, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, RRTs, and others interested in wilderness and austere medicine education.

  • Outdoor enthusiasts and adventure travelers
Those with prior hiking or outdoor experience who are excited to explore mountains, national parks, and remote regions while learning practical medical skills.

  • Non-medical participants with a strong interest in wilderness medicine
Friends, partners, or travelers without medical credentials are welcome and often find the course valuable for mountain safety and decision-making.

Physical Requirements (Important)

  • Excellent physical fitness — this is a demanding trek at altitude with steep terrain

  • Previous hiking or outdoor experience strongly recommended

  • Prior altitude exposure encouraged, though not mandatory

  • For Cotopaxi climbers: experience with high-altitude trekking, crampons, and ice axe use is required

  • Ability to function in remote environments with limited access to medical care

This trip is not recommended for

  • Individuals with limited fitness or no hiking experience

  • Those uncomfortable with exposure, altitude, or sustained physical effort

  • Participants seeking a luxury or sightseeing-focused vacation

  • Anyone unwilling to accept the inherent risks of wilderness travel

  • People who dislike early mornings, long days, or epic mountain views 😉

Group Dynamics

This is a small-group, tight-knit expedition built on shared effort, mutual support, and curiosity. Participants come from diverse backgrounds but quickly bond through challenge, learning, and time spent together in the mountains.

If you value camaraderie, inclusion, and learning by doing, you’ll feel right at home on this trip.

The Experience

The Experience

This is not just a trek — it’s a high-altitude Mountain Medicine expedition through one of the most diverse and dramatic landscapes in South America.

Over eleven days in Ecuador, you’ll move deliberately from vibrant city streets to remote Andean peaks, applying wilderness medicine education in the very environments that demand it most. Days are spent trekking at altitude, exploring national parks, and progressively building comfort in mountainous terrain, while evenings bring shared meals, reflection, and hands-on medical learning with a group that quickly feels like family.

This experience is equal parts physical challenge, professional growth, and deep connection — to place, to purpose, and to the people beside you on the trail.

From Colonial Streets to Andean Summits

One of the most unexpected parts of this trip is how seamlessly it blends culture, climbing, and recovery. You’ll explore the historic heart of Quito, trek multiple volcanic peaks in the Andes, and then slow the pace completely with two restorative nights in the Mindo Cloud Forest.

For those who opt in, the experience expands into a true mountaineering objective with an overnight expedition and summit attempt on Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes.

Learn Where It Counts

Education on this expedition doesn’t happen in a classroom — it happens on the trail, at altitude, and in real time. Wild Med Adventures faculty deliver Mountain Medicine CME alongside experienced local guides, integrating lectures, discussions, and skills practice directly into the rhythm of the journey.

You’ll learn to assess, manage, and make decisions in remote, resource-limited environments, reinforcing concepts through lived experience rather than theory alone.

The Flow of Each Day

  • Morning movement — breakfast followed by trekking, travel, or exploration

  • Summit days and hiking objectives with progressive altitude exposure

  • Midday breaks for learning, rest, and fueling

  • Afternoon returns to lodges or camps

  • Evening lectures, discussions, and downtime with the group

This intentional balance keeps the experience challenging but sustainable, allowing space for both physical effort and meaningful learning throughout the expedition.

What You’ll Take Home

Yes, you’ll earn 20 AMA PRA Category 1 CME™ credits — but you’ll also leave with:

  • Hands-on wilderness medicine skills applied in real environments

  • Confidence operating at altitude in remote terrain

  • A deeper understanding of expedition risk, decision-making, and teamwork

  • Lasting friendships built through shared challenge and accomplishment

Most participants return home saying the same thing:

“I can’t believe this counted as CME — and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.”
