Anyone expecting a traditional classroom-only medical course
(And maybe anyone who doesn’t enjoy campfires, fresh air, and learning by doing.)
Group Dynamics
This is a small-group, highly inclusive learning environment built around shared experience, collaboration, and mutual respect. Participants quickly form strong connections through group problem-solving, hands-on scenarios, and evenings spent together at camp. Whether you arrive solo or with colleagues, you’ll be welcomed into a supportive, engaged community that values curiosity, teamwork, and growth.
The Experience
The Experience
This is not a classroom course — it’s a fully immersive wilderness medicine experience.
Over four days in the Adirondack backcountry, you’ll live, learn, and train in the same environment where wilderness medicine is actually practiced. Days are filled with hands-on education, realistic scenarios, and skills workshops, while evenings slow down around campfires, shared meals, and conversations that turn classmates into lifelong friends.
This course is about more than certification. It’s about learning by doing, building confidence in austere environments, and reconnecting with why medicine — and the outdoors — matter so deeply.
Live, Learn, and Camp in the Wilderness
Unlike traditional courses, this AWLS® experience takes place entirely in a remote, private wilderness camp. You’ll sleep in large platform tents with individual cots, wake up surrounded by forest and lake views, and step straight from camp into hands-on learning. The setting itself becomes part of the curriculum, reinforcing adaptability, teamwork, and comfort in the outdoors.
Learn Where It Counts
Wilderness medicine is best learned outside the walls of a lecture hall. Education is delivered through a blend of short lectures, practical skill sessions, and scenario-based training conducted throughout the camp and surrounding wilderness. You’ll practice patient assessment, stabilization, and evacuation techniques in real terrain, guided by experienced faculty who understand both medicine and expedition environments.
The Flow of Each Day
Morning lectures and interactive discussions
Outdoor skills workshops and hands-on practice
Scenario-based training in wilderness settings
Evenings at camp with shared meals and reflection
This rhythm creates a balance between focused learning and immersion, allowing skills to build naturally while keeping the experience engaging, social, and sustainable.
What You’ll Take Home
Yes, you’ll earn AWLS® certification and CME credits — but you’ll also leave with:
Practical, confidence-building wilderness medical skills
Experience applying medicine in real outdoor conditions
A deeper understanding of patient care in austere environments
Meaningful connections with like-minded learners
Memories of a week that felt more like an adventure than a course
Many participants leave saying the same thing:
“I can’t believe this counted as CME.”
