Samir Patel, MD, FAWM

Dr. Samir Patel completed the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship at Baystate Medical Center in 2019 and currently works as an Emergency Medicine physician in North Carolina. With a background growing up in Northern California camping throughout Sequoia, Redwood, Yosemite National parks, he developed a true passion for hiking and mountaineering, especially during his time in New Zealand. Along with this, he is also an avid traveler with solo backpacking trips throughout central America, Oceanica, and East Asia including multiday caving in Vietnam to summiting Mt. Toubkal in Morocco. Eventually he’ll hit South America and Antarctica to complete all 7/7 continents. He became AWLS certified in 2017 while in Guatemala and became an AWLS instructor in the fall of 2018. He has a strong passion for teaching medicine and loves to blur the lines between his career in the emergency room and the outdoors. During his fellowship, Dr. Patel climbed Friendship Peak in Mongolia, Kilimanjaro & volunteered for 3 months at the Himalayan Rescue Association in Manang in the Spring of 2019. (A high altitude clinic serving the Mt. Everest region in Nepal.) He is also a certified Swift Water Technician and trained in high/low angle rescue. His interests include high altitude medicine and physiology, climbing, kayaking, mounting biking (no-jumps), excessively elaborate meals on mountain tops, and whiskey to end the evening. PS: Sandals are all-terrain footwear for Dr. Patel.
